Main differences from Binder Jetting technology and Material Jetting technology

Binder jetting and material jetting are two different 3D printing technologies that have some similarities but also some key differences.

Binder jetting

Is a 3D printing process that uses a binder material to selectively bond together particles of powder material, such as metal or ceramic powders, to create a solid object layer by layer. The process involves depositing a layer of powder onto a build platform and then selectively jetting a binder material onto the powder in a specific pattern. This process is repeated layer by layer until the final object is complete.

Material jetting

Is a 3D printing process that uses inkjet printheads to deposit droplets of liquid material, such as photopolymer resin, onto a build platform. The droplets of liquid material are then cured, either through exposure to UV light or heat, to create a solid object layer by layer.

Key differences

Some of the key differences between binder jetting and material jetting include:

  • Material type

Binder jetting is typically used with powder materials, while material jetting is typically used with liquid materials.

  • Printing resolution

Material jetting is capable of producing objects with very high resolution and fine details, while binder jetting may not be as precise in terms of resolution and detail.

  • Post-processing

Binder jetted objects typically require additional post-processing steps, such as curing and sintering, to achieve their final properties, while material jetted objects are typically ready to use after they are cured.

Both binder jetting and material jetting have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the choice of technology depends on the specific application and requirements of the printed object.
